BAH Calculator FAQ

Find answers to frequently asked questions about our BAH Calculator tool and Basic Allowance for Housing benefits.

Is this BAH Calculator tool official?

No, this is an independent tool not affiliated with the Department of Defense. For official BAH rates, visit the DTMO BAH Calculator at defensetravel.dod.mil.

How accurate are the BAH estimates?

Our estimates are based on current published BAH rates and should be used for planning purposes only. Individual circumstances may affect your actual BAH entitlement.

When do I start receiving BAH?

You typically start receiving BAH when you move out of military barracks or base housing. The exact timing depends on your duty station and housing availability.

Can I receive BAH while living on base?

Generally, no. If you live in government quarters (on-base housing), you typically don't receive BAH. However, there are exceptions for certain circumstances.

What if my actual rent is different from my BAH?

You keep the full BAH amount regardless of your actual housing costs. If your rent is less than BAH, you keep the difference. If it's more, you pay the difference.

Why isn't my ZIP code available?

Our calculator includes major metropolitan areas. If your ZIP code isn't available, try using a nearby major city's ZIP code for a general estimate.

How often do BAH rates change?

BAH rates are typically updated annually, usually effective January 1st. The 2025 rates are currently in effect.

Do I pay taxes on BAH?

No, BAH is a non-taxable allowance, making it more valuable than equivalent taxable income. This is one of the key benefits of military service.

What factors affect my BAH rate?

Your BAH rate is determined by three main factors: your military rank/pay grade, your dependency status (with or without dependents), and your duty station's ZIP code.

Can you help with official BAH determinations?

We cannot provide official BAH determinations. Please contact your unit's finance office or visit the official DTMO website for official rates and eligibility.
